United Kingdom Country Mosaic
January 16, 2006
This MERIS (MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) image centers over the United Kingdom, UK named shortly. The UK consists of the island of Great Britain, the northern part of the island of Ireland and some smaller islands forming the British Isles. Name confusion around England, Britain and UK is historic. Great Britain is divided into three regions: England (south), Wales (east) and Scotland (north), but none of these actually refer to the whole nation, only UK or United Kingdom and Britain do. The climate is generally mild and chilly, but very famous for being wet. About 300 days per year the sky is overcast or the weather is rainy, but thanks to this climate one can enjoy lush green landscapes throughout the year. London, sitting on the Thames' shores, is the nation's capital and is one of the most extended metropolitan areas of Europe. Although it is no longer the largest city in the world as it was in the 19th century, it remains one of the major financial and cultural capitals in the world.
