United Arab Emirates

January 16, 2006
The prominent features in these AATSR (left) and MERIS (right) images are the islands of the United Arab Emirates and the capital Abu Dhabi, which has grown exceptionally over the last 25 years since the oil boom, causing the urban areas to spread into the desert and up the coast to Dubai. It also shows the contrast between the desert and the Hajar Mountains to the East. The features showing up red in the AATSR and green in the simulated true color MERIS are vegetation. Healthy vegetation shows up red using near infrared channels as in the AATSR image. These features are particularly prominent around the oasis town of Al-Ain on the UAE, Oman border. Over the Straits of Hormuz and The Gulf, we can observe the complex geology of the Zagros Fold Belt in Iran.
