Cell Stem Heart Project Launched

A PROJECT to discover whether a patient's own stem cells can be used to treat heart disease is launched today.

Researchers at Barts and The London NHS Trust will carry out the four-year study involving 700 patients. They hope to find out whether stem cells - the body's "master" cell - could help patients who have suffered a heart attack and those who have heart disease.

The research is funded by the Heart Cells Foundation., Dr Anthony Mathur, a consultant cardiologist who is leading the research, said: "This is one of the biggest and most comprehensive trials of its kind in the world.

"Our studies will tell us if adult stem cells in bone marrow can repair damaged hearts and if so how these cells should be administered to patients."

People interested in taking part in the clinical trial can get more information by calling 020 8983 2216, or by emailing laura.robertsbartsandthelondon.nhs.uk.
