FAA Awards $132 Million Contract to Continue ATC Training in Oklahoma City:
NORMAN, Okla., July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- University of Oklahoma Outreach has received the largest contract in OU history in winning the Federal Aviation Administration Air Traffic Instructional Support services contract, providing for a base and four one-year options totaling $132 million.
The contract provides support to the FAA Air Traffic Academy's initial and specialized training for all current and future air traffic controllers. In addition, the contract provides support for Air Traffic courseware development at the Academy and Air Traffic field facilities throughout the continental United States, as well as Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and Guam. Support for international air traffic training and courseware development for approximately 22 different countries is provided by the contract as well."We are excited to have the opportunity to continue our long relationship with the FAA, and we are also very proud of the significant impact this contract has on the local economy in terms of jobs and infrastructure," said James P. Pappas, Ph.D., vice president for University Outreach.
Administered by the College of Continuing Education, a unit within Outreach, the university's FAA/ATC program has provided support to the FAA since 1981. With more than 300 employees, the OU department currently runs two shifts and assists the FAA in training approximately 2,500 air traffic controllers each year. The Oklahoma City-based training center is the largest concentration of Department of Transportation employees outside of the Washington, D.C., area.

The OU staff consists of air traffic control instructors, instructional systems design specialists, educational specialists, computer systems analysts and computer programmers, as well as a highly qualified support and administrative staff.
