Chile: Strike at Copper Mine Halts Work
Posted on: Wednesday, 18 July 2007, 00:02 CDT
Copper miners in northern Chile went on strike Tuesday, halting production at a state-owned mine and blocking roads.
The miners' work stoppage at the Cobre de Chile-run mine was the latest action in a series of walkouts effecting the copper mining industry over the last three weeks, El Mercurio reported online.
Last August, a strike at the world's largest private mine was the result of miners demanding a 13-percent pay hike. After negotiations they accepted a 10-percent raise.
