Vietnam Airlines earnings up in 1st half

HANOI, July 12 (Xinhua) — Vietnam Airlines, the country’s national flag carrier, registered a revenues of 9.38 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (nearly 586.3 million U.S. dollars) in the first half of this year, posting year-on-year rise of 11 percent, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Thursday.

The airlines gained a pre-tax profit of 204.9 billion VND (12.8 million dollars) in the six-month period, fulfilling 57 percent of its target for the whole year. It conducted 31,1490 flights, transporting 3.8 million passengers and 53,385 tons of cargoes.

Domestic passenger figures grew 23.9 percent to 2.2 million, while foreign travelers increased 6.9 percent to over 1.6 million.

Vietnam Airlines has recently employed foreign consultants to improve information technology systems and bought four A321 aircraft. It is planning to establish new subsidiaries in insurance and finance.
