Caltrans Chief Deputy Director Randell H. Iwasaki has been named to the national Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Advisory Committee by U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters.
"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has made ITS an important component of his Strategic Growth Plan, and the appointment of Mr. Iwasaki to this key national committee bolsters California's role as a leader in ITS," said Caltrans Director Will Kempton.
The ITS Advisory Committee is part of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) federal transportation bill and is overseen by the Department's Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA).
Iwasaki and Caltrans played a key role in the 12th World Congress on Intelligent Transportation Systems that was held in 2005 in San Francisco. That event brought together more than 7,000 international researchers, industry professionals and government officials from 57 countries to present and observe advance transportation technologies and deployment activities.
Iwasaki currently manages the day-to-day operations of the Department, including an operating budget of nearly $14 billion and more than 21,000 employees. He has served in a number of high profile engineering and management positions during his 20 years with Caltrans. Some of his more recognizable projects include the Toll Bridge Seismic Retrofit Program and the east span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
