Six Iranian passengers were injured Wednesday when gunmen attacked a bus in Al-Mahdia city in southern Baghdad, police sources told the KUNA news agency.

Attackers opened fire with light weapons as the bus drove through a mock checkpoint the attackers had set up. The injured passengers were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The bus was carrying Iranians from Karbala to Baghdad, KUNA said.

The attack came one day after U.S. and Iranian officials met to decide on a joint U.S.-Iraqi-Iranian security arrangement for Iraq. Negotiators agreed to set up a tripartite committee to focus on prosecution of terrorist groups and insurgents in support of the Baghdad government’s efforts to establish security and stability in Iraq, KUNA said.

The committee is also charged with monitoring Iraq-Iran border.
