DALLAS (AP) — Royal Dutch Shell PLC and Dallas-based TXU Corp. announced Friday they will develop a wind-powered electricity generation project in the Texas Panhandle.

The proposed 3,000-megawatt project would be situated in Briscoe County, southeast of Amarillo. A megawatt of wind energy is enough to power 250 Texas homes, said Susan Williams Sloan of the American Wind Energy Association. The state’s current capacity is 3,352 megawatts, the association said, which ranks Texas No. 1 in the nation, ahead of California.

The Panhandle project is to be built in phases, and will have 1,000 wind turbines when complete, TXU spokesman Tom Kleckner said.
