KUALA LUMPUR: Mattel South East Asia Pte Ltd (Malaysia) has recalled fewer than 500 Fisher-Price toys from stores nationwide following a global recall of 1.5 million Chinese-made toys due to excessive lead content.

The three toys affected are Barney Best Manners Phone, Sing ‘N Play Alphabook and Giggle Gabbers.

The excessive lead content found on its surface paint could turn toxic if ingested by children.

Mattel Southeast Asia Pte Ltd, commercial director Allan Khong has issued a notice that a number of products dated April 19 to July 6 from a China-based manufacturer to be removed from sales.

Mattel South East Asia Pte Ltd (Malaysia) marketing manager Cheok Chin Won said the recall measure was precautionary and would have little impact on overall sales.

“We are also taking immediate action to inform our retailers and consumers,” she said.

“A statement will be issued on Sunday to inform consumers and Mattel will refund the toy purchase which can be used to buy a new toy.”

The global recall affects various play sets made for Mattel’s Fisher-Price unit including popular pre-school characters like Elmo and Big Bird, along with dozens of others.

Mattel said it was reviewing procedures with respect to all of its Chinese-made products.
