A team of New Flyer Industries, ISE Corporation and Ballard Power Systems Inc. has been selected by BC Transit to supply 20 hydrogen hybrid fuel cell buses. These advanced buses and their support infrastructure will be put in regular revenue service in Whistler, British Columbia. BC Transit operates 700 buses as the provincial agency charged with public transportation services in British Columbia.
With assistance from the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada, BC Transit will acquire and put in operation the 20 fuel cell buses and the hydrogen infrastructure to support them. "Our goal is to see the world's first fleet of fuel cell buses on B.C. roads by the end of 2009 to showcase B.C.'s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to take advantage of the potential of hydrogen. The purchase of these fuel cell buses and hydrogen fuel reinforces B.C.'s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions," said Kevin Mahoney, Chair of BC Transit.
"We are pleased to have been selected by BC Transit as the prime contractor for the fuel cell mass transit initiative," said John Marinucci, President and CEO of New Flyer. "We applaud BC Transit on its vision to commercially deploy this environmental initiative which preserves non-renewable energy sources, substantially reduces our environmental footprint and improves our quality of life."
"ISE is a leader in providing hybrid propulsion solutions for transit buses and other heavy-duty vehicles. Our relationship with BC Transit, New Flyer and Ballard further demonstrates ISE's commitment to clean transportation. We're proud to be a part of this exceptional team," said David Mazaika, ISE's President and CEO. Under the contract, ISE will supply the ThunderVolt(R) hybrid fuel cell drive systems with Siemens electric drive components, Ballard 150 kW fuel cell, and ISE proprietary hybrid technology and controls.
