Tram Works Roll Out As Digging Gets Under Way
By NO BYLINE
WORK on Edinburgh’s tram line was getting under way in earnest on Leith Walk today.
The first stage of the roadworks involves moving and protecting utility pipes and cables at a section of Leith Walk from McDonald Road to Duke Street.
Trams bosses aim to keep disruption to a minimum but asked people to bear with them.
The entire programme will take more than three years to complete and involves digging up the roads twice – first to move water mains and gas pipes from the path of the trams, then to build the tram lines, stops and overhead wires.
Some drilling work around Ocean Drive and Tower Place has already taken place.
Work along the route will be carried out in stages, with a maximum of seven roadworks taking place at any one time.
The first work on Princes Street will happen in October, with the busy Haymarket junction to follow in November, and Edinburgh Park in December.
Construction take places from 7am to 7pm on weekdays and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays.
