MONTREAL (CP) - Security officials at Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport located a passenger who passed through security with a multifunction tool that included a knife in his bag.
The breach delayed international flights at the airport for over three hours on Saturday night, as authorities searched airplanes one by one. Montreal police said about 20 planes were affected by the investigation.
Lynne Labelle of Montreal police said the multifunctional pliers, which contain a small knife, were noticed only after the man left the security area to catch his flight. She said the tool was seen in the man's backpack after it passed through an X-ray scanner.
Labelle said the man was unaware he was not allowed to bring the tool aboard a plane and it's unlikely he will face charges.
She didn't know why the passenger was not stopped immediately by airport security.
Flights resumed their regular schedule after 9 p.m. Labelle said thousands of passengers were delayed during the operation.
