American Airlines may double the number of U.S. flights it has to Narita, the main international airport in Japan, in the next 10 years because of an increase in traffic, an executive said Tuesday.

The executive, David Cush, senior vice president for global sales, said during an interview that traveler demand would justify adding more flights. American would like to increase daily flights from Dallas to three from two and double the number of flights from Chicago, Los Angeles and New York to two a day, he said.

Narita International Airport, which serves Tokyo, will increase the number of annual flights by 4,000 to 193,000 by March 2010 as it extends one of its two runways and becomes more of a regional hub. A third of American’s passengers to Narita use it to fly on to other destinations.
