“Being selected by Dow Jones for its sustainability index reflects our commitment to serve our customers in a responsible manner and it’s a great validation of our operations,” said Jim Rogers, chairman, president and CEO of Duke Energy. “It also shows that we will meet customers’ growing demand for power in sustainable ways as we focus on global climate change and other environmental and economic challenges facing us.”

In 2006, Duke Energy was named to the DJSI for its North American “multi utility” sector. This reflected the company’s ownership of natural gas assets and pipelines, which were spun off to create Spectra Energy in January 2006. Launched in 1999, the DJSI tracks the financial performance of leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. In selecting the top performers in each business sector, DJSI reviewed companies on several general and industry- specific topics related to economic, environmental and social dimensions. These included corporate governance, environmental policy, climate strategy, human capital development and labor practices.

Duke Energy, one of the largest electric power companies in the United States, supplies and delivers energy to approximately 4 million U.S. customers. The company has nearly 37,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity in the Midwest and the Carolinas, and natural gas distribution services in Ohio and Kentucky. In addition, Duke Energy has more than 4,000 megawatts of electric generation in Latin America, and is a joint-venture partner in a U.S. real estate company.

Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., Duke Energy is a Fortune 500 company traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol DUK. More information about the company is available on the Internet at: http://www.duke-energy.com/.
