Harris Corporation and FAA Mark Cutover of 100th Network Hub Site for New FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure Program

WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have successfully cutover 100 of the 160 legacy network hub sites to the new FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure network that is designed to improve performance and save nearly $600 million in operating costs over the 15-year life of the program. The FAA and Harris marked the milestone achievement with a special ceremony today at FAA headquarters, which was attended by Harris and FAA representatives, including FAA Administrator Marion Blakey.
Harris is the prime contractor and system architect for the FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) program, one of the largest government telecommunications initiatives ever undertaken. The network ensures the efficient, secure and reliable transmission of voice, data, radar, weather and other information critical to the operation of the National Airspace System (NAS), and provides the foundation for the FAA's Next Generation Air Transportation System (NGATS).
FTI replaces six legacy networks with one nationwide, all-digital network backbone -- upgrading and improving telecommunications operations at more than 4,000 FAA facilities nationwide, and providing more than 20,000 telecommunications services. To date, nearly 90 percent of the 4,000 sites and 20,000 services have been transitioned nationwide.

Harris is leading a team of top telecommunications companies consisting of AT&T, Qwest Communications International, Sprint, Verizon Communications, and Raytheon Technical Services. The team is supporting the FAA in replacing the LINCS network, the Data Multiplexing Network, the Bandwidth Manager network, and the National Aviation Data Interchange Network with an integrated telecommunications infrastructure. Requirements include replacing more than 20,000 telecommunications services, upgrading switching and routing capabilities, improving network monitoring and control, implementing a state- of-the-art security system, and providing network-engineering services.
