Newfoundland Legislature Dissolved, Three-Week Election Campaign Underway

Posted on: Monday, 17 September 2007, 12:00 CDT

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. (CP) - The Newfoundland and Labrador legislature has been dissolved, kicking off a three-week election campaign Premier Danny Williams is widely expected to win.

The vote is set for Oct. 9, the first under fixed-date legislation passed three years ago.

Williams met Monday with Lt.-Gov. Ed Roberts, asking him to dissolve the 48-seat house of assembly.

The Conservative premier was to launch his campaign and unveil his platform later Monday in his home riding of Humber West in Corner Brook.

Liberal Leader Gerry Reid, who began his campaign Sunday, arriving at St. John's harbour aboard a fishing boat, has accused Williams of forgetting rural issues during his four years in power.

Reid toured the capital city in a bus, making several stops, meeting voters and introducing more than a dozen candidates.

The Liberal leader also released his platform, promising to cut taxes, create jobs and increase accountability in wake of a legislative spending scandal that has cast a cloud of suspicion over the house of assembly.

On Friday, Newfoundland auditor general John Noseworthy released a report that found politicians from all three parties spent more than $2 million in public funds on questionable donations and personal items, such as alcohol, cigarettes and lottery tickets.

Some of those named in the report are seeking re-election.

Observers expect the Conservatives, who currently hold 34 seats, to easily win the vote.

At dissolution, the Liberals had 11 seats and the NDP one. There were two vacancies.

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael was to launch her campaign later in the day in her home riding of Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi in St. John's.
