The U.S. Chamber of Commerce today welcomed Verizon as the first sponsor of "America's Small Business Summit 2008" to be held on April 16-18, 2008, in Washington, D.C.
"Verizon's support for the Summit reflects the company's strong commitment to small businesses," said Chamber President and CEO Tom Donohue. "This sponsorship will help the Chamber make the nation's premier annual gathering for small businesses a highly effective and dynamic event."
Eric Fitzgerald Reed, vice president of market issues and policy for Verizon, said, "Verizon has very strong relationships with small- and medium-sized businesses and their communities. This summit represents a rewarding opportunity to engage small-business owners in issues and policy matters which affect small and large firms equally. We want to ensure that small businesses continue to have affordable access to our advanced telecommunications products and converged solutions, which provide significant opportunities in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Expanding broadband capabilities, eliminating taxes on broadband access and reducing regulations of the Internet are critical issues which impact small-business operations."
The Chamber's last small-business summit attracted more than 500 small-business owners, state and local chambers of commerce representatives, top elected officials, and business experts. Speakers included former U.S. Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich; Doug McMillon, CEO of Sam's Club; Donna Brazile, Roll Call columnist and CNN Contributor; and Bill Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard and FOX News Contributor. The event also included a coordinated lobbying blitz with attendees meeting their elected officials in Congress about the issues that affect them most, such as tax regulations, the rising cost of health care, and the need for legal reform.
The 2008 event is expected to attract more participants and an equally impressive list of speakers. It will also include another round of congressional visits and presentation of the third annual U.S. Chamber Small Business of the Year Award.
