Two men were killed Monday when the plane they were flying crashed after departing the Lake in the Hills airport Monday.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said a Yakovlev 52, a fixed wing single-engine plane, crashed shortly after takeoff just before 2 p.m., killing both men inside. The identities of both men have yet to be released.
According to the McHenry County Conservation District, the plane crashed into a 450-acre conservation area near Ackman and Randall roads in Crystal Lake.
According to prepared release from the conservation district, the plane reportedly experienced difficulty shortly after taking off from the Lake in the Hills airport.
“Witnesses say the pilot made a hard left before crashing into the wooded area,” the release states.
According to FAA records, the plane, manufactured in 1987, is registered to Yak In Flight LLC in Wilmington, Del.
Investigators from the FAA and National Transportation Board are at the crash site heading up the investigation.
Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
