WhiteWave Foods Company to 'Green' Natural Products Expo East With Wind Power

WhiteWave Foods Company (WWFC), maker of Horizon Organic® and Silk® Soymilk, announced today that it will offset the environmental impact of The Natural Products Expo East by purchasing green tags, or renewable energy certificates. WWFC will purchase enough green tags to cover the energy used to power all 425,000 square feet of the Baltimore Convention Center for the duration of Expo East from Sept. 26-29.
Green tags help "green the grid" by replacing the power produced from burning fossil fuels like coal and natural gas with clean, renewable wind energy. With the Expo East green tags purchase, WWFC will offset more than 280 tons of climate-altering carbon dioxide emissions.
This year at Expo East, Silk and Horizon will dedicate the center of their booth spaces to "A Conversation in Green." The area, comprised largely of sustainably produced and recycled materials, will house a space for visitors to discuss and share new ways in which the natural and organic communities can be leaders in social and environmental responsibility. The project is co-sponsored by Natural Products Expo East and top ideas will be shared during the "Conversation in Green" seminar at next year's Expo conference.
"WhiteWave Foods has a long history of being green, but we always have room to improve. To that end, we believe it's important to open a dialogue about the future of environmentally sustainable and socially responsible business practices," said Joseph E. Scalzo, President and CEO of WWFC. "Working together, we can bring about greater change."
WWFC offsets 100 percent of the power used in the production of Silk and Horizon Organic products, and all of the energy used at its corporate headquarters. The company's wind energy purchases to date are the equivalent of eliminating of 144,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions or taking nearly 25,000 cars off the road for one year.
Silk Soymilk recently wrapped up its "Green Caps for Green Energy" program which gave people a chance to be active players in growing alternative fuel sources for a cleaner environment. Consumers who purchased Silk products with green-colored caps could visit SilkSoymilk.com, enter the Universal Product Code (UPC) and for every number entered, Silk donated 30 kilowatt-hours in green tags. Over the course of the four-month program, Silk boosted its wind energy contribution by more than 60 percent and donated a total of 10,000 kilowatt hours of wind energy -- the equivalent of planting nearly 2,000 acres of trees.
Horizon Organic also remains committed to being a leader in environmental land stewardship, and has initiated a partnership with Holistic Management International (HMI) to further enhance land conservation and animal welfare efforts. The brand also makes positive environmental impacts through its sustainable organic farming practices. Since it was founded in 1991, Horizon Organic has converted more than 250,000 acres to organic, which positively impacts the health of the people and the planet.
