NEW YORK, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ — Infinity Bio-Energy ltd, a leading Brazilian Ethanol producer, today announced a commitment to encourage the development and implementation of new self-imposed standards and guidelines for the production of sugarcane fuel ethanol as well as the production of energy co-generated from sugarcane and green coal produced from the same biomass.

“As the world faces the challenge of climate change, the transportation sector is pushing to establish higher standards concerning greenhouse gas emissions,” said Infinity Bio-Energy CEO, Sergio Thompson-Flores. “The Clinton Global Initiative inspired us to review the way we operate and to increase the standards of our social responsibility. The CGI challenges inspired us to improve the environmental quality of our product using the cleanest possible production process, raising the bar in the bio-fuel sector and promoting a better quality of life for generations to come. We understand that sustainability investment is essential to creating long-term shareholder value, and will publish these activities and investments in our financial reports.”

Infinity Bio-Energy is committed to producing a fuel that is truly clean by implementing state-of-the-art technology to reduce to a minimum the level of green house gas emissions throughout the manufacturing process. Over the past months, Infinity has undertaken an inventory of its Greenhouse Gas Emissions and amounts of fossil fuel consumed directly and indirectly in its production of sugar cane ethanol. Furthermore, an aggressive sustainable production practice throughout will demonstrate a continued commitment to the environment and the global community.

“Sugarcane ethanol already guarantees ten times less GHG emissions than oil and at least nine times less emissions than ethanol from other raw materials such as corn,” said Thompson Flores. “With this commitment, we are making huge strides towards maximizing energy efficiency, aiming to ensure that sugarcane ethanol can be produced in the most sustainable manner as possible and help set standards worldwide. We are in an exceptional position to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions because of our ability to rely on renewable energy sources derived from biomass, including the ‘green coal’ Bagasse.”

Infinity Bio-Energy will invest in projects which will reduce the overall consumption of fossil fuels and optimize use of land. It is making significant changes to the agricultural production process resulting in the increase of crop diversity and productivity, restoration of degraded unutilized or underutilized lands, minimization of the application of pesticides and fertilizers, and increase in water efficiency.

In addition, with some of the highest social responsibility standards applied to its operating practices, Infinity Bio-Energy will increase the income base for farmers and forest workers and improve employment opportunities in any region where the company operates. Currently Infinity’s operations are focused in the Mato Grosso do Sul, Espirito Santo, Minas Gerais and Bahia states of Brazil, regions where public investments are scarce. The company expects to develop new projects in the Caribbean and Central America, specifically the Dominican Republic and Panama, and intends to expand its Green Ethanol commitment here as well as to other countries as the company diversifies its investments.

Through rigorous benchmarks, audits, and improvements of every part of the production process, Infinity Bio-Energy will maximize energy efficiency and reduce consumption of fossil fuels thereby reducing carbon emissions to their lowest viable levels, while using and recycling as much of the by-products as possible. Based on the commitment’s results, Infinity Bio-Energy hopes to set new standards for sugarcane ethanol production and environmentally-sensitive production practices around the world.
