Texas Moves Toward Carbon Free Energy, Reflecting ''Climate Change'' for Nuclear; World Energy Author Assesses the Role of Nuclear Power

Posted on: Friday, 28 September 2007, 12:01 CDT

The announcement this week of the proposed expansion of a Southeast Texas nuclear plant has captured the interest of nuclear-power advocates and opponents alike. If built this would be the first nuclear power plant expansion in 30 years. Read the article at www.WorldEnergySource.com. In the pages of the latest edition of World Energy Magazine (Vol. 10, No. 3), Frank L. Bowman, president and CEO of the Nuclear Energy Institute, notes that America has been characterized as addicted to imported oil, a situation that is exacerbated by the country's growing dependence on imported natural gas as well. As Bowman remarks in "The Changing Climate for Nuclear Energy," this dangerous dependency can be mitigated through the integration of nuclear power. He summarizes nuclear's advantages and addresses the "yes, but" factors that still dog this energy source.

"Our operating philosophy is predicated on planning for, and thereby avoiding, low-probability, potentially high-consequence events," writes Bowman. "Discussion and debate over how to address climate change is dominating the policy agenda in Washington and across the country. The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) has never taken a position on climate issues, but over the next several months we will be working with the NEI Executive Committee and our member companies to define an appropriate policy position for the only carbon-free technology that is available today and capable of large-scale expansion."

In the same issue, George Mitchell the former CEO of Mitchell Energy also discusses this dependency and possible solutions, Curtis Burton of Buccaneer discusses Energy Security, and Tom Fry of NOIA discusses the current legislation at the federal level.

Since 1997, World Energy Magazine has been written by and for the decision makers in the global energy industry.
