Do You Have Your Carbon Capture Story Straight?

Carbon Capture Status and Outlook in Washington, DC on December 3 - 5, 2007 will feature the most up-to-date thinking around "clean coal" and carbon capture and sequestration (CCS). With nine presentations from cutting-edge capture technology providers, and two carbon pilot case studies, this event is the first to provide a global update on the capture challenge.
Recent Legal Actions Make This Meeting Especially Timely...
Five utilities, including AES, Domnion, Dynegy, Xcel and Peabody recently received letters from the New York State Attorney General's office, demanding they fully disclose "financial risks from greenhouse gases" to their shareholders -- all five utilities have plans to build new coal-fired generation.
"Any one of the several new or likely regulatory initiatives for CO2 emissions from power plants -- including state carbon controls, EPA's regulations under the Clean Air Act, or the enactment of federal global warming legislation -- would add a significant cost to carbon-intensive coal generation," the letters said, according to NY Times.
This is perhaps the sharpest incident to date in a wave of skepticism from regulators, and agitation from environmentalists, public and shareholders, about new coal power that does not at least address, if not implement, CCS.
The Industry is Responding...
However, not all is lost on the coal front: Southern Company is putting steel in the ground for its Orlando Station IGCC plant, AEP has announced two capture pilot programs, and GreatPoint Energy just received a third round of funding for their capture-friendly and smaller-scale gasifier. If coal is saved, it will be from a new wave of technology innovation taking shape as "clean coal" -- combining gasification, oxy-fuel and pre-treating technologies, and capture methods.
These developments and the latest thinking on the future of the industry will be discussed by independent power and CTL producers, regulatory officials, venture capitalists, engineers, financiers and policy analysts at the meeting. Keynote speakers include Dr. Julio Friedmann, of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Scott Klara of National Energy Technology Labs. The full day pre-conference technology showcase will host an array of capture solution providers and pilot/demonstration case studies.
