American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy Recognizes APS Lighting Program As 'Exemplary'

Posted on: Wednesday, 3 October 2007, 15:00 CDT

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), based in Washington, D.C., has recognized APS' ENERGY STAR Residential Lighting program as "exemplary," after conducting national research to honor America's leading energy efficiency programs.

"ACEEE conducted this national review to recognize outstanding energy efficiency programs and honor the people and organizations responsible for their success," explained Dan York, ACEEE project director. "Programs such as the APS ENERGY STAR Lighting program demonstrate the very real value of energy efficiency to the customers it serves."

Martin Kushler, ACEEE utilities program director, said, "The APS ENERGY STAR Lighting program delivers energy savings that are critical in helping customers cope with energy costs, plus it makes an important environmental contribution because lowering energy use helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

This is the second major national award APS has received for its two-year-old lighting program. Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency named APS an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year.

Since the program's inception, APS has sold more than three million compact fluorescent lights, and has committed to sell an additional one million before year-end 2007. The lights are 75 percent more efficient than incandescent bulbs and last five to seven years.

A major component of the APS program is educational outreach. As such, APS has sponsored consumer awareness fairs throughout Arizona with some of its more than 300 retail outlets that sell the lights at a discount to APS customers.

The CFL program is paid for by APS customers, and approved by the Arizona Corporation Commission.

"While this program is part of APS' overall energy conservation program, we know by the sales results that customers are responding to the call to save money and help the environment," said Tom Hines, APS program manager.

The bulbs sold in the APS program will save customers $90 million over the life of the bulbs, and will result in savings of 900 million kilowatt-hours of energy, or enough energy to power 60,000 homes. In addition, they will avoid 675,000 tons of carbon emissions.

APS, Arizona's largest and longest-serving electricity utility, serves more than 1 million customers in 11 of the state's 15 counties. With headquarters in Phoenix, APS is the largest subsidiary of Pinnacle West Capital Corp. (NYSE: PNW)
