Endesa to Build 24km Natural Gas Pipeline

Spanish utility Endesa has announced that it will build a 24km natural gas pipeline between Velilla de Cinca and Mequinenza in the Spanish provinces of Huesca and Zaragoza.

Construction will take place in two stages: the first between Velilla del Cinca and Fraga and the second between Fraga and Mequinenza. The first stage of construction is scheduled to begin in October once the fruit harvest has ended. Investment in this project will total E4.9 million.

The first stage of the project calls for the installation of a 10.8km line of steel pipe measuring 12 inches in diameter. The first stage will allow the current liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants supplying the town of Fraga and its industrial park to be dismantled, starting in February 2008.

The second phase is for a 13.2km line, with a diameter of 12 inches, between the towns of Fraga and Mequinenza, with construction set to begin in October 2008. The pipe would be operational within three months, meaning that Mequinenza will have piped natural gas in 2009.

This pipeline will allow for the expansion of Aragon's natural gas pipe and transmission infrastructure to meet the expected increase in demand and eliminate the satellite LNG plants currently in use in the area.
