Hundreds of people gathered in Moscow Sunday to honor the memory of Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was killed one year ago.

Including friends and family of the slain journalist, the demonstrators demanded Russian officials take action to solve the case, the BBC reported.

Politkovskaya, who was an outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was fatally shot in her Moscow apartment Oct. 7, 2006.

The journalist had earned international acclaim for exposing how Russian-backed forces had been responsible for atrocities against civilians in Chechnya.

The memorial in Moscow on Sunday comes months after Russian Prosecutor-General Yuri Chaika had 10 suspects arrested in the homicide case, RIA Novosti reported.

Chaika had focused his investigation on the stance that an organized crime group, partially made up of former Russian security officers, committed the contract-style killing.
