The chairman of China Iron and Steel Association says Western anger over surging Chinese steel imports runs counter to the idea of globalization.

Zhang, president of Anshan Iron and Steel Group Corp., said some western countries have been using double standards when it comes to trade and competition in the steel industry, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua said.

Rising steel production in China was fueled by rapid economic development and a global economic recovery in recent years, said Zhang, who attended a meeting of International Iron and Steel Institute in Berlin.

Chinese steel exports to European Union countries has been estimated to be around 10 million tons for 2007, double that of last year.
