–Chrysler, America’s No 4 carmaker, sealed a new four-year pay deal with the United Autoworkers union six hours after a deadline that triggered an all-day strike by workers across the country. Calling off the strike last night, the union said its agreement “protects jobs for our communities and also protects wages, pensions, and health care for our active and retired members”. Full details of the deal were kept secret pending approval, but Chrysler said they include transferring billions of dollars of healthcare liabilities from the company to a union-run trust. UAW members ratified a similar deal agreed last month with General Motors.
