Globalstar Launching Static IP/VPN Service For Satellite Data Customers in Western Europe
MILPITAS, Calif., Oct. 11, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) — Globalstar, Inc. (Nasdaq:GSAT), a leading provider of mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses, governments and individuals, today announced that its subsidiary, Globalstar Europe, is launching Static IP (Internet Protocol) address and virtual private network (VPN) capability for its satellite data customers throughout western Europe. The new services are possible due to enhancements at the Globalstar gateway ground station located in France.
The Globalstar Static IP address modems will communicate to specific IP addresses using the new VPN service and the introduction of the virtual private network service will provide Globalstar Europe customers with an enhanced level of security when making use of the Internet.
"During the past three years both our two-way and Simplex satellite data markets have shown strong growth and this announcement is just another demonstration of Globalstar’s continued commitment to expand our suite of satellite data solutions to meet the growing requirements of the remote wireless data marketplace," said Jay Monroe, Chairman and CEO of Globalstar, Inc. "This new capability combined with our store and forward capability enables Globalstar to offer reliable duplex data solutions that are ideal for large corporate customers who require remote secure email and Internet access. Customers with supervisory control or SCADA and other telemetry monitoring requirements will also be able to access secure and reliable data feeds from their various remote assets."
Globalstar recently introduced a number of initiatives designed to both broaden the market for its data products while increasing the reliability of its satellite duplex data services. In addition to providing a new remote antenna for its GSP-1720 duplex data modem, and recently introducing the MCM-4, a multi-channel modem product capable of providing satellite data throughput speeds of up to 144 Kbps for customers in North America, all Globalstar duplex modems can now be used with a "store and forward," feature. This new feature permits data to be temporarily stored and as satellites pass overhead, the information is automatically transferred over the satellite network. Mr. Monroe added, "This capability provides our data customers with an effective operating tool enabling them to reliably transfer their remote data using the Globalstar duplex data network."
Once Static IP is set-up, a single IP address is assigned to a customer’s Globalstar modem, delivering a constant address and affording greater communication possibilities through the Globalstar network.
Globalstar introduced Static IP and VPN services to its customers in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean in early 2006. Since their introduction, Globalstar customers have used the services for secure email and Internet access applications, plus the services have been used to provide customers with the ability to monitor and control a variety of remote industrial assets such as oil and gas wells as well as geological and environmental sensors.
The new service in Europe is expected to be available later this month.
