Gas and electricity supplier EDF Energy has opened a flue gas desulphurization plant at its Cottam power station. The project, which commenced in 2002, costs GBP108 million.
The Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) plant removes 94% of the sulfur dioxide gas emissions produced by the 2,000MW power station.
Vincent Rivaz, EDF Energy's CEO, said: "We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and recognized this major investment was essential in securing the long-term future of the site and reducing emissions. With FGD now in place in both Cottam and West Burton power stations we can prevent around 180,000 tonnes of sulfur dioxide emissions each year.
Member of Parliament John Mann said: "I welcome moves with the energy sector to provide ever 'cleaner' and 'greener' sources of power to customers. The need to meet equally, the twin challenges of energy demand whilst protecting the environment has never been more profound - I support initiatives such as those by EDF Energy in Cottam as a means of doing so."
