EDMONTON - A spokesman for Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach says he is not backing down from anyone as he prepares his response to a report recommending a major increase in energy royalties.
Tom Olsen says no decision has been made on whether to grandfather existing royalty deals in the face of the oilpatch's strong opposition to the proposal.
But a newspaper report says Stelmach told business leaders at a private meeting Thursday that he would "not trounce existing agreements" - the opposite of what's being recommended in the report by a government-appointed review panel.
Panel chairman Bill Hunter says the report concludes any new royalty scheme should apply to all players in the oil and gas sector.
Stelmach hasn't been available to clarify his remarks.
NDP Leader Brian Mason says grandfathering existing royalty agreements would mean Stelmach is turning his back on billions of dollars in energy revenues owed to Albertans.
