MONTREAL - The union representing workers at Montreal's historic Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery says there are no plans to step up pressure tactics as it waits for stalled contract negotiations to resume.
Union president Daniel Maillet says the 130 employees will continue to strike on Fridays until a deal is inked. Last week, workers voted 94.5 per cent against management's latest offer, which they say did not address pension demands.
Employees had been locked out in May after contract negotiations faltered and then went on strike. They went back to work in mid-September after four months when management agreed to lift the lockout.
When employees returned to the job, there were about 500 bodies in cold storage at the Roman Catholic cemetery, one of Canada's largest. The dispute upset families and friends waiting to bury their loved ones.
Management says it is willing to shift some money around in what it calls its final offer, but that will not exceed what is already on the table.
