ESRD Awarded Contract to Develop Advanced Simulation Tools for Aircraft Structures Made of Composite Materials

Posted on: Monday, 15 October 2007, 09:00 CDT

ESRD, Inc., a provider of high-fidelity FEA solutions including simulation software and services, today announced that it has been awarded a $1.4M Navy contract to develop and validate advanced CAE tools for the simulation of large airframe components made of fiber-reinforced composites. These tools will incorporate new failure theories and methods (e.g. SIFT, EFM) to predict with high fidelity the strength and structural response of composite structure in the presence of propagating delaminations. New approaches to the problem, such as multi-scale adaptive modeling, will be developed to create an analysis methodology that will support a more efficient composite structural certification process.

StressCheck®, a p-FEA software tool developed by ESRD, will serve as the solution engine for the project. StressCheck has unique capabilities for composites having been selected by the CAI as "the tool to replace as well as radically improve existing industry standard software currently used to size composite bonded joints."

"The goal is to reduce life cycle costs for new and existing naval aircraft and to accelerate the design to deployment schedule. The aerospace industry is in agreement that the key to achieving this challenging goal is substantial increase in the use of advanced numerical simulation tools," said Barna Szabo, President & CEO, ESRD Inc. "This project will improve the competitiveness of the aircraft manufacturing sector in the state of Missouri and deliver substantial benefits to the U.S. Military."
