Tokyo, Oct. 18 (Jiji Press)–Nippon Steel Corp. and trader Mitsui & Co. have jointly received an order from Australia’s Woodside Petroleum Ltd. to supply carbon steel pipes totaling 130,000 tons for 20 billion yen, the top Japanese steelmaker said Thursday.

The pipes will be used in the construction of a pipeline for the largest Australian energy firm to transmit natural gas from an offshore gas field 180 kilometers off northwestern Australia to a new onshore LNG processing plant.

Nippon Steel will provide the entire amount of tubes needed for the pipeline. Of the order, a large-diameter welded pipe for the trunk line account for 120,000 tons and a smaller-sized frequency electric resistance welded pipe to keep gas hot for 10,000 tons.

The gas field in the Pluto project is estimated to have 5 trillion cubic feet of dry gas reserves. Its annual production capacity is estimated at 4.3 million tons.

Japan’s Tokyo Gas Co. and Kansai Electric Power Co. plan to purchase natural gas produced in the field.END
