Gas Natural to Start South American Biogas Project

Posted on: Friday, 19 October 2007, 06:00 CDT

Spanish energy group Gas Natural, in a joint venture with energy management company GRS Valtech, has been awarded a project to carry out the treatment and exploitation of biogas from the Dona Juana municipal landfill in Bogota, Colombia in South America.

The aim of the project is to mitigate the environmental damage to the area that is caused by the uncontrolled emission of methane, generated from decomposing urban waste, one of the main components of biogas and a major greenhouse gas.

The installation of a waste treatment plant will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by up to 15 million tonnes over the next 21 years. The total cost of the project is expected to be up to $17 million.

In addition to improving environmental conditions around the landfill site, the capture and treatment of biogas will enable the exploitation of a source of renewable energy and will boost the sustainable development of the Colombian capital.

Gas Natural's subsidiary in Colombia, Gas Natural ESP, will also be involved in the project, distributing the captured biogas to industries near the landfill site through an independent supply network, facilitating the replacement of the coal currently being used.
