Pratt & Whitney’s Waste Heat-to-Power Organic Rankine Cycle Solutions Now Eligible for the California Self-Generation Incentive Program
EAST HARTFORD, Conn., Nov. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Pratt & Whitney Power Systems (PWPS), a world leader in Organic Rankine Cycle solutions for waste heat, biomass, geothermal and solar thermal power applications, announced today that its broad offering of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) turbogenerators are now eligible for the California Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP). Under the program, qualifying California utility customers can receive up to a $1,250/kW rebate to help reduce the cost of installing PWPS waste heat-to-power generation equipment. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company.
The SGIP was modified under a California Public Utilities Commission decision making Organic Rankine Cycle/Waste Heat to Power systems eligible for the SGIP along with a list of other greenhouse gas-reducing solutions. The SGIP aims to transform the energy marketplace, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and manage peak load performance. For more information on the program, including incentive values, view the SGIP handbook or visit www.energycenter.org/sgip.
“Pratt & Whitney Power Systems and Turboden are pleased to offer SGIP-eligible power solutions to California businesses,” said Peter Christman, President, Pratt & Whitney Power Systems. “The addition of waste heat to the SGIP’s renewable energy offerings broadens the options for companies like ours to provide innovative and cost-effective energy solutions.”
“The California Public Utilities Commission has recently modified the Self-Generation Incentive Program to target technologies that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Jana Kopyciok, Program Manager for the Self-Generation Incentive Program at the California Center for Sustainable Energy. “The program is now open to a wider base of potential beneficiaries, and we are pleased with the addition of Waste heat-to-power technologies such as ORC.”
Pratt & Whitney Power Systems offers a wide spectrum of Organic Rankine Cycle products ranging in power output from 250 kW to 10 MW of renewable power. PWPS’ ORC systems use a closed-loop thermodynamic process that converts low to moderate-temperature hot resources into efficient and reliable electric power. These systems are driven by a simple evaporation process and are entirely enclosed, producing no emissions.
Pratt & Whitney Power Systems and its subsidiary Turboden have experience and installations in ORC Waste Heat to Power applications throughout North America and around the world, including bottom cycling on gas turbines, reciprocating engine exhaust and jacket water heat recovery, and heat recovery from municipal waste and biomass incineration.
Turboden, a Pratt & Whitney Power Systems company, is an Italian company and a global leader in the design, manufacture, and servicing of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) turbogenerators, which harness heat to generate electrical power from renewable sources, including solar energy, biomass, geothermal energy and waste heat. Turboden and Pratt & Whitney combined have over 250 ORC power plants sold in more than 20 countries and offer turbogenerators from 250 kWel to 4 MWel (standard units) and up to 10 MWel (customized units).
