Bullock said that ThermoEnergy’s portfolio of technologies addresses four global megatrends: The decreasing availability of clean water; the high demand for environmentally friendly technologies and products; growing population and increasing standards of living; and, the increasing demand for fertilizer. In addition, the world is becoming much more carbon conscious, with or without carbon regulation, and ThermoEnergy’s portfolio of technology addresses all of these, Bullock added.
ThermoEnergy aims to be the very best at providing resource recovery and reuse from municipal, industrial, and agricultural wastewater streams worldwide, Bullock said. In the electric power business, the company strives to provide the leading clean coal combustion technology.
Bullock said that ThermoEnergy takes chemicals that are pollutants out of wastewater streams so that they can be reused, using a technology that the company calls its Cast® Platform. In addition to water remediation, the technology also reclaims elements that might otherwise have gone into the environment and been wasted. On the power side, ThermoEnergy is a developing technology to effectively remove the smokestacks from a coal plant by burning carbonaceous fuels such as coal and collecting all the emissions.
The markets for ThermoEnergy technologies in the wastewater treatment business include ammonia recovery, sugar recovery, and metals recovery. In the U.S., those markets measure many hundreds of millions to billions of dollars over the next several years, Bullock said. In addition, China is spending a tremendous amount of money to clean up the water, there is a large market as well, Bullock added. ThermoEnergy has a pilot project that the company expects to be shipping soon to China for ammonia removal, he noted.
ThermoEnergy also has $4 million contract for a potable drinking water system for a U.S. military base.
For partnerships and/or acquisitions, Bullocks said that ThermoEnergy is interested in technologies that ally with its own. He noted that many times when ThermoEnergy’s equipment is deployed, often there are other technologies that if they are deployed simultaneously offer a bigger value for the customer.
ThermoEnergy’s model is to partner with those who have strong, in-depth technical skills, Bullock said in Europe, Brazil, and elsewhere in terms of both selling equipment but also providing service for ThermoEnergy’s equipment.
