Frost & Sullivan Applauds Cisco for its Revolutionary Space Router
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Based on its recent analysis of the satellite transponder market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Cisco with the 2012 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for Technology Innovation. The Cisco Internet Routing in Space (IRIS) payload is the only router in space, making Cisco a 100 percent share owner of the space routing market. The Cisco space router takes advanced routing and switching in space to unprecedented levels of sophistication.
Cisco IRIS allows space and satellite communications to take full advantage of the value and capability of networking. It extends the benefits of the Internet Protocol (IP) to satellite communications, which have traditionally used proprietary protocols that are difficult to operate within conventional IP-based wireline and wireless networks.

Cisco IRIS shortens the time to market of new services and facilitates the transfer of satellite communications bandwidth from one application to another, allowing service providers to optimize bandwidth use and maximize revenue. It helps satellite service providers adapt to changing environments and requirements much faster than traditional satellites.

IRIS is satellite frequency band-agnostic. It will improve communication and bandwidth with traditional Ku- and C-band satellites, emerging high-throughput Ka-band satellites, as well as new military X-band satellites.
