Schiavone-Picone Receives Top National Honor for ‘DEP Water Tunnels & Croton Water Treatment Plant’ Project

May 11, 2012

HONOLULU, May 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — The joint effort between Schiavone Construction Co. LLC (Secaucus, NJ) and John P. Picone Inc. (Lawrence, NY) won the 2012 Alliant Build America Award for “Best New Municipal & Utilities Project” at the Associated General Contractors of America’s 30th Annual Convention Awards Dinner. Among the 16 winners, the Schiavone-Picone JV was recognized for their work at the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Water Tunnels & Associated Works / Croton Water Treatment Plant.

Out of a record number of submissions, Schiavone-Picone’s performance at the DEP development project covered vital points of leadership from technological advancement, project management, innovative techniques and materials, safety, community relations and environmental sensitivity. Fulfilling these criteria earned them the AGC’s highest honor as one of the nation’s most significant construction projects of the year.

The Croton Water Treatment Plant was part of an ambitious project undertaken by NYC and a major element in maintaining quality of life for all its residents. The tunnels will deliver raw water and carry treated water, up to 290 million gallons per day, from the Croton Water Treatment Plant. The project’s historical value to NYC’s water supply connects the oldest active water tunnel in NYC, the New Croton Aqueduct (1892), to the first water treatment plant built by the City.

The successful completion of this project required teamwork between: NYCDEP, Schiavone-Picone JV, URS/Malcolm Pirnie, AECOM/Hazen and Sawyer JV and all the subcontractors and firms involved with the project. This DEP project has received other industry recognition including the Best Civil/Infrastructure awarded by ENR New York and making the shortlist for the 2011 Tunnels & Tunneling International Awards.

“Schiavone would like to recognize all of our employees from Engineering, Equipment and Fabrication, Field Operations and all supporting departments that were part of the Schiavone-Picone Joint Venture that contributed to the innovation and expertise that delivered such a successful project,” said James Hamill, Deputy Executive Director for Schiavone.
