Overcoming Unemployment One Resume at a Time
Resume Companion launches Resumes For America. A free, non-profit initiative helping students and veterans find meaningful employment.
North Bethesda, MD (PRWEB) June 22, 2012
Resumes For America, sponsored by Resume Companion, will partner up with all accredited universities and colleges across the nation to offer their online resume builder software free of charge to all students, alumni and veterans. The announcement of this new service at The National Association of Colleges and Employers´ (NACE) conference in Las Vegas, NV this week was a huge success as it comes at a time when Universities are strapped by budget constraints but are more in need of providing students with support.
Despite the drop in unemployment rate across the nation the two demographics that still hover above 9% are new graduates and veterans. Many of these students send out hundreds of resumes without any response from perspective employers.
Fueled by the belief that many qualified students don´t get the opportunity to interview due to minor mistakes on their resume, Resumes For America, aims to increase the chances to those that need it the most. “Most students have never written a resume, don´t know where to begin and end up sending a resume that will never make it past HR,” said Doris Lee, Director of University Outreach at Resumes For America. “Our goal is to help students build high-impact resumes by giving our software to career centers for free, since they are in direct contact with students every single day.” The resume builder includes over 3,000 unique careers as well as industry specific bullet points to ensure students are clearly verbalizing their skill sets. This will also maximize career service resources as counselors can spend more time refining resumes rather than creating student resumes from scratch.
Any student or alumni with an active university email address from a partnering school will have full access to the online resume builder, resume samples and resume templates. In addition to resumes, they will also offer tools for students to write professional cover letters as well as business letters such as follow up letters and thank you letters.
By partnering with career service centers, Resumes For America will replace their internal Certified Resume Writers with University career service counselors. Typically, after a user builds a resume, they will receive a critique with notes. Resumes For America will urge students to make an appointment with career counselors to get the same critiques, thereby promoting student engagement with career centers.
Resumes For America, powered by Resume Companion, is an online resume builder designed to enable anyone to create a professional resume in minutes with no prior writing experience. The staff consists of Certified Resume Writers, university administrators and programmers working together to develop a user-friendly resume builder that is simple in design, but effective in delivery.
