“The industry has for some time seen a great need to replace and add to existing infrastructure. However, industry objectives are not uniform across all regions of the country with booming areas of population growth in the west presenting different challenges than areas where aging infrastructure is of greatest concern,” Art Reyes, a Water Details LLC analyst in Houston states.

The firm recently published an industry study and estimated that some US$390 billion of water-related infrastructure investment would be needed over the next ten to fifteen years to mitigate the effects of droughts, population growth and to improve upon aging infrastructure.

“This is not to say that this level of investment will be met. Indeed, we have seen some pressure against that level of spending from various corridors. Industry participants from project design to technology providers are ever-evolving with new approaches to resource management,” Reyes added.

What is clear is that the level of investment will be large and will lead to challenges and opportunities in the industry. Dynamics in water law, financing industry projects, public support for spending and regional water demands are just a few of the issues that will define the industry moving forward.

“We’re excited to have presentations from the USGS, water law experts, companies with project experience including CH2MHill, Black & Veatch and municipality perspectives from the City of Houston,” Reyes adds. Registered attendees include other construction firms, law professionals, engineers and government representatives.
