Six-Year-Old “Micro-Activist” Volunteers to Help Hawaiian Monk Seals, Inspires All Ages

July 12, 2012

SAN MARCOS, Calif., July 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Six-year-old “Micro-Activist” Connor Berryhill weighs about one-tenth as much as a full-grown Hawaiian monk seal. That doesn’t stop him from gathering yards of discarded netting and piles of plastic debris, which could have ensnared the much larger and critically endangered monk seals, during a recent visit to the Hawaiian island of Kaua`i. Such efforts are par for the course for this kindergartener who has also pitched in to clean up the Batiquitos Lagoon (near Encinitas, Ca.) and rescue an abandoned juvenile raven.

Berryhill has taken it upon himself to become an unofficial ambassador for the Hawaiian monk seal conservation effort. (Community outreach is a critical part of protecting this species; educators from NOAA and Surfrider Net Patrol visit fourth-grade classrooms on Kaua`i and Moloka`i regularly.) Berryhill brought samples of the marine debris he collected back to his home state of California as part of a presentation on “good Hawaiian monk seal manners,” or how to respectfully observe and interact with the seals in their natural environment.

Berryhill is also eager to educate all interested children, beginning with his classmates, about how they can help protect the Hawaiian monk seals – all the way from California – by properly disposing of trash before it becomes a hazard to wildlife. His sincere, un-self-conscious enthusiasm for improving the world around him – whether by collecting marine debris or picking trash out of a wetland lagoon – inspires all ages to become more aware of how their decisions affect wildlife and the environment.
