Interoperable Open Architecture to Address How to Make Open Systems Truly Open

August 23, 2012

LONDON, August 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ –

Open architectures, as we have come to know them, are not necessarily as open as we
might like. Whilst new modules can be interchanged and integrated with significantly less
hassle than in closed systems, often the open systems still use proprietary code or data
dictionaries that prevent third party installation of new sub systems. (

Interoperable Open Architecture, taking place in October in London will bring together
senior military personnel from the US, UK, Sweden and defence research organisations to
learn how open standards are helping to reduce the time and cost of procurement and make
procurement truly competitive as well as industry experts to understand how the nature of
procurement is changing, how that is going to affect them and how they can position
themselves to benefit from this change. (http://www.ioaevent.com)

Key themes of IOA include:

        - UK MoD's Land Open Systems Architecture and the US DoD's UAS Control
Segment programmes will deliver briefings on how to reduce the time and cost of
          procurement
        - Military Vetronics Organisation and NATO's Research and Technology
Organisation will showcase how to improve system and system-of-systems
interoperability by adopting and helping to develop, international architectural
          standards
        - The Open Group will brief on how to improve the flexibility of future air
assets by involving the Future Airbourne Capability Environment standard
        - Workshops hosted by the UK MoD and the Object Management Group on how to
improve your own architectural designs and the benefits of open architecture

In the build up to the Interoperable Open Architecture (http://www.ioaevent.com),
DefenceIQ conducted an interview with Gordon Hunt, Chief Applications Engineer at RTI, who
explains the need for the global community to properly understand the terminology and the
drivers in the IOA field. Mr Junt’s technical expertise spans embedded systems,
distributed real-time systems, robotics, and controls. Access the full complimentary
