POWER Magazine Announces Gas-Fired Top Plant Award Winners
HOUSTON, Sept. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Each year, POWER magazine selects the most noteworthy gas-fired power plants worldwide to be designated Top Plants. Winning plants are profiled in the September issue, and awards are presented at a banquet the following May at the ELECTRIC POWER Conference & Exhibition. This year’s award-winning gas-fired Top Plants are:
- Claus C Combined Cycle Power Plant, Massbracht, Limburg Province, Netherlands. This repowering project took a simple-cycle plant and doubled its output (while cutting CO2 emissions) by converting it to a combined cycle plant.
- Enecogen Power Station, Rotterdam, Netherlands. By providing operational flexibility to a region that is committed to increasing its percentage of renewables, this project plays an essential role.
- Glow Phase 5 Combined Cycle/Cogeneration Project, Rayong, Thailand. Thanks to the project team’s ingenious solutions to a tight site, this plant may produce more power per square meter than any power plant in Asia.
- John Sevier Combined Cycle Project, Rogersville, Tennessee. This Tennessee Valley Authority plant came in under budget, ahead of schedule, and with the first of GE’s new generation of dual-fuel combustion turbines.
- LCEC Generation Plant, Lovington, New Mexico. As with many new gas plants, Lea County Electrical Cooperative’s 46.7-MW gas engine plant was built with flexible operation in mind, in part to pair well with a nearby wind farm.
- Lodi Energy Center, Lodi, California. The first Siemens Flex-Plant 30 “fast-start” combined cycle plant in the U.S. uses treated municipal wastewater for cooling and provides operational flexibility that’s increasingly valuable in renewables-heavy California.
- University of Iowa Research Park Tri-Generation Power Plant, Iowa City, Iowa. This combined heating, cooling, and power plant can burn landfill gas as well as natural gas to level a university campus’s peak demand.
