Earth Rangers and Holcim Canada Announce a National Partnership to Help “Bring Back the Wild” for Migratory Song Birds in Canada
TORONTO, Oct. 2, 2012 /CNW/ – Earth Rangers and Holcim (Canada) Inc.,
announce a three year partnership to support Earth Rangers’ Bring Back
the Wild program.
Bring Back the Wild is Earth Rangers’ kid powered conservation program
that educates children and their families about the importance of
biodiversity and partners with them to raise funds to support the
acquisition and restoration of endangered habitats across Canada.
Funds raised also support Earth Rangers’ School Outreach Program, which
travels to over 550 schools across Canada annually.
The partnership between Earth Rangers and Holcim Canada will focus on
three migratory song birds found on Holcim Canada properties.
Highlighting a different species each year, this year’s conservation
project with the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) will help protect
the wood thrush by:
-- Supporting land acquisition in the Tremblant-Prevost Natural Area in Quebec through the purchase an additional 25 acres of mature deciduous forest for the wood thrush to call home. -- Support migration research through the purchase of 60 geolocators to be placed on wood thrush so scientists can study and track their migration path and stopover sites, so we can learn how best to protect their breeding and wintering areas.
“Holcim is committed to minimizing our ecological footprint and
recognizes biodiversity as a key element of our long term
sustainability strategy. It is important for our organization to find
partners who can enhance and support these efforts. Through our parent
company, Holcim Ltd., we have already establisheda relationship with
the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Today’s
partnership announcement is just another step in our journeyto enhance
awareness of biodiversity, support conservation initiatives across
Canada and educate youth about ourcommitment to protect biodiversity
and work towards sustainable development,” says Bill Galloway, Senior Vice President, Holcim Canada.
Earth Rangers and Holcim Canada will also work together to ensure the
habitat rehabilitation work taking place at Holcim sites across Ontario
and Quebec continues to be of the highest quality for migratory song
birds and other species.
“We are very proud to be partnering with Holcim Canada on this important
project to protect migratory song birds”, says Peter Kendall, Executive
Director, Earth Rangers. ”Migratory song birds are among the most
dramatically declining animals globally due to habitat loss. The only
way to turn this decline around is by working together – children and
families, non-profits and corporations. Holcim Canada understands this
and has made a strong commitment to not only assist groups like Earth
Rangers, but to also ensure that the restoration work on their
properties enhances local biodiversity”.
***Special note to media*** Earth Rangers’ Wildlife Biologists and their live Animal Ambassadors
are available for interviews in Ontario and Quebec.
