Financial Services Firm Opts Out of Traditional Office Holiday Party to Take on Rare Children’s Disease
In this season of giving, in lieu of a party, Paramount Merchant Funding opted for an office fundraiser with staff, family, friends, vendors and other supporters gathering at a Times Square bowling alley to raise $15,000 for research on behalf of non-profit Noah´s Hope, founded to support children battling the fatal Batten disease.

The office holiday party season is in full swing here and around the country.
But not for Paramount Merchant Funding.
The four-year-old firm that´s in the business of providing working capital on a quick turnaround to small- and medium-sized companies took a different approach to the traditional holiday soiree this year.
No, they didn´t play the Grinch over at Paramount.
In fact, it was just the opposite. In this season of giving, Paramount opted for an office fundraiser instead, with staff, family, friends, vendors and other supporters gathering at a Times Square bowling alley to raise $15,000 for research into a rare and fatal children´s disease.
“Raising money for a good cause in this season of giving was an idea that we all just kind of got behind,” said Paramount Merchant Funding Managing Partner Jared Feldman.
That cause, chosen by a vote of the company´s more than 50 employees, is a non-profit called Noah´s Hope that´s seeking a cure and lobbying regulators for approval of promising therapies for the incredibly rare and always fatal children´s genetic illness called Batten disease.
Just 450 children in the U.S. have the fatal illness. So research dollars for finding a cure are few: in a recent year, the federal government contributed just $750,000 to research, according to the charity.
So Paramount stepped up to help the little charity that could.
Noah´s Hope is named for an 8-year-old Chicago-area child, Noah VanHoutan, who was stricken several years ago. Noah´s parents, Jennifer and Tracy VanHoutan, established the charity and advocacy group in 2009. Since then, Noah´s 6-year-old sister, Laine, has also been diagnosed. Mercifully, Laine´s twin sister Emily has been spared the disease.
The ruthless genetic illness attacks children, beginning anywhere from 6 months to 8 years old, hitting them with ever-worsening seizures and robbing them of their speech, balance and mobility and eventually leaving them bed-ridden and incapacitated. It´s fatal by the time a stricken child reaches 12 years old.
The staff at Paramount Merchant Funding proposed a number of charities for their planned fundraiser, settling on Noah´s Hope after learning of the plight of the VanHoutan family.
“We are so thankful to the employees of Paramount and to Paramount´s many generous vendors and supporters for raising these much-needed funds for Batten disease research and awareness of the disease,” said Jennifer VanHoutan, mother of Noah and Laine. “We also greatly appreciate that the employees of Paramount did this important work and undertook this fundraising effort even as they faced difficult struggles of their own after the terrible destruction the New York metropolitan area suffered in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. It was truly a selfless effort and our family and those of other children affected with Batten disease thank them dearly for it.”
Paramount´s staff enjoyed the challenge of raising the money for the charity, which they noted required a different skill set than their natural strength of providing working capital for companies.
“We had no idea how difficult it was,” said Paramount Managing Partner Dan Smith with a laugh. “But through a lot of hard work and effort, we got it done.”
The fundraising mix included sponsored lanes at the Bowlmor Lanes in New York´s Times Square. About a hundred people paid $50 apiece to enjoy the bowling, music and camaraderie at the November 16 affair. A raffle and personal donations rounded out the effort.
Paramount executive Feldman credited company employees for pushing ahead with the fundraising efforts even in the face of incredible hardships they faced themselves in the aftermath of the devastation of the New York metropolitan area by Superstorm Sandy.
“We´re so proud of our fellow employees for meeting the challenge of raising funds for this important cause even as they overcame the hurdles of dealing with Superstorm Sandy and all that the terrible storm threw at us here in the region,” Smith said from the company´s Midtown offices.
So while the office party wasn´t part of Paramount Merchant Funding´s holiday celebration this year, the bowling fundraiser that took its place was a fun scene enjoyed by staff, family, friends and contributing vendors. And all for a good cause in this season of giving.
