Deadline Is Approaching For Help In Paying Heating Bills

April 18, 2013

LIHEAP applications must be submitted by April 30

NEWARK, N.J., April 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Public Service Electric & Gas Company is reminding its customers that Tuesday, April 30, is the deadline to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), and that Friday, May 31, is the deadline for LIHEAP emergency assistance.

LIHEAP provides assistance to families and individuals to help pay for home heating and medically necessary cooling costs. Homeowners should apply and renters may qualify if their heat is included in their rent. Only the last month of income counts toward eligibility, so many newly unemployed or underemployed may now qualify. Income-eligible households typically receive about $300 toward heating costs and may be eligible for $200 toward electric costs for those needing medically necessary cooling.

Customers who have already received LIHEAP assistance and who still are having difficulty paying their winter heating bills may be eligible for additional LIHEAP emergency assistance. Customers may receive up to $450 depending on their PSE&G bill account balance. To apply, customers must heat with PSE&G, have a LIHEAP payment posted on their PSE&G heating (gas or electric) bill, and have a shut-off notice. LIHEAP emergency assistance will only remain open until May 31 for PSE&G heating customers that have already applied for LIHEAP by April 30.

“We know there are many customers who are eligible but unfortunately miss the deadline,” said Joseph A. Forline, vice president of customer solutions for PSE&G. “We want to see as many customers as possible take advantage of this opportunity to get help with their energy bills.”

LIHEAP income eligibility levels are at 200 percent of the federal poverty level. That means a family of four with a monthly income at or below $3,842 may be eligible. The chart below provides income eligibility information.
