NFL Coach Sets the Pace for Indy 500 in new Corvette Stingray
Jim Harbaugh Gets Behind the Wheel of Chevy Corvette Stingray to Pace Iconic Race
JOLIET, Ill., May 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — The most famous race in American history will be paced by one of the most anticipated sports cars of our generation — the 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray. And behind the wheel of the new Corvette — former Indianapolis Colts quarterback and current coach of the San Francisco 49ers, Jim Harbaugh.
In addition to being a former Colts quarterback and in the franchise’s Ring of Honor, Harbaugh has connections to the race in other capacities. The head coach of the Super Bowl runners-up also is a principal in Panther racing, which has three drivers (J.R. Hildebrand, Priol Servia, Townsend Bell) participating at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
While Harbaugh is familiar with the racing scene and has no shortage of experience under the brightest of lights, he still admitted to feeling the pressure of driving the new Corvette at one of the most legendary races in American history.
“I know my heart is going to be beating out of my chest,” Harbaugh said.
While the unfamiliarity of the situation likely contributes to his anticipated adrenaline, the Niners’ coach will have the opportunity to get behind one of the fastest and most eye-catching Corvettes in recent memory. The Laguna Blue Corvette pace car will feature the Z51 performance package and be identical to Corvette production models other than a few additional safety measures to meet track regulations.
This marks the 12(th) time a Corvette will be the pace car for the iconic 33-car race, and this is sure to be one of the most memorable, as the Stingray nameplate has been resurrected to adorn the 2014 Corvette.
“It’s great to have a true racing fan like Jim Harbaugh drive the Corvette pace car,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “He personifies the Indianapolis 500′s spirit of competition — and he’s a true athlete, just like the all-new Corvette Stingray.”
Chevrolet has a long history with the storied race, as Louis, Arthur, and Gaston Chevrolet all drove in the race. In fact, Gaston Chevrolet won the race in 1920. Pace cars began participating in the Indianapolis 500 in 1911 and have continued in different capacities ever since.
The 2014 Corvette Stingray is set to hit dealerships late this summer and Bill Jacobs Auto is the place to get financing and bad credit auto loans in Chicago, IL.
