Dial800 Survey Finds “.com” URLs and 800 Numbers Earn More Consumer Trust
A recent survey by Dial800 finds that “.com” URLs and 800 numbers inspire more consumer trust than their 877 and “.net” counterparts. This phone-based survey also determined that buyers seek both call-in and online options with preference results split virtually 50/50.

Communication services and marketing optimization company Dial800 recently announced the results for its latest survey, which tapped into nearly 1,700 respondents to assess the perceived trustworthiness of businesses based on their web and phone presence. The survey utilized misdialed inbound calls to major corporations that were routed through Dial800´s 50,000+ number database. With this diverse sample pool, Dial800 was able to gauge dial-in vs. online purchase preferences as well as customer trust associated with toll-free numbers and top level domains.
Of consumers who convert to purchase based on television advertising, 51% will call the promoted phone number while 49% will search for the product or service online. Radio advertising yielded similar results with 46% calling in and 54% turning to the web.
“The results of the survey illuminated the need for both phone-in and online options for consumer connection and purchase,” Scott Richards, CEO of Dial800, said. “The desire is virtually equal–approximately half of consumers prefer dialing a phone number to place a purchase, while the other half looks to the web for more information and to buy.”
Perceived trustworthiness among popular top level domains and toll-free phone numbers was also assessed, with consumers overwhelmingly preferring “800” and “.com” to “877” and “.net.” 77% of respondents trust a “.com” web address more than “.net,” while 65% trust 800 numbers more than 877 numbers.
“Despite having many options for top level domains and phone numbers, consumers are more comfortable with and, in turn, have more trust for the ℠traditional´ ℠.com´ sites and 800 numbers,” Richards said. “This is critical information for businesses as they select these consumer-facing identities–a less trustworthy top level domain, for example, may offset any potential upside to choosing a more memorable or relevant website name. The same goes for toll-free numbers.”
