Webcor Builders Opens Honolulu Office
One of California’s Largest Contractors Looks to Replicate Success in Hawaii; Vice President Dave Zarubin Tapped as Office Lead
HONOLULU, April 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Webcor Builders (“Webcor”), one of the the largest general contractors in California with offices in San Francisco, Alameda, Los Angeles and San Diego, has opened a new office in Honolulu. Located at 1003 Bishop St. in the Pauahi Tower, this office will serve as a hub as the company develops its Pacific Rim operations in Hawaii. Vice President, Dave Zarubin, director of Webcor’s Federal division, will lead the office. Zarubin has also been responsible for many of Webcor’s private market marquee projects throughout the Bay Area, and spent several years living and working in both Maui and Oahu before joining Webcor.
“Based on our success throughout California, we decided in 2014 to expand our business geographically. Selecting Hawaii made perfect sense for us for a number of reasons,” said Jes Pedersen, Webcor’s President and CEO. “The active high-rise apartment and condominium development, our experience as the leading multi-family residential builder on the West Coast as well as our structural concrete expertise make Hawaii an extremely promising market for us.”
In the past decade alone, Webcor has constructed millions of square feet and billions of dollars’ of projects ranging from residential high-rise towers, K-12 schools, hospitals, higher education and institutional facilities, parking structures and commercial office buildings. In addition to California, Webcor has been working in Guam, an unincorporated U.S. territory, since 2010 and has constructed the largest NAVFAC project on the island in 30 years, a brand new hospital which opened April 21, 2014. This project has given Webcor experience with the unique challenges of constructing a complex facility on a fairly remote Pacific island. Zarubin led Webcor’s efforts in winning and building the project as part of Webcor’s push into the federal market sector during the economic downturn a few years ago.
“Our experience in Guam and the time I spent in Hawaii early in my career,” said Zarubin, “in combination with Webcor’s outstanding reputation as a union general contractor and self-perform concrete subcontractor in California, will help us as we expand in Honolulu.”
Zarubin is a 31-year construction industry veteran. Most recently, he led Webcor’s Federal division as it pursued projects for the U.S. military and other government institutions. Significant projects under his leadership include the aforementioned Naval Hospital in Guam and 41 Area, an 18-building Reconnaissance Battalion Operation campus for the Marines at Camp Pendleton, California. Prior to that, he directed several of Webcor’s major Bay Area projects including the Intercontinental Hotel in San Francisco and the Avalon Mission Bay residential complex near AT&T Park, home of MLB’s San Francisco Giants. Before joining Webcor in 1997, he managed projects throughout the western United States, including Hawaii and Oregon. Under his leadership, the Honolulu office will offer preconstruction, general contracting, self-perform concrete construction, and design-build services to a wide array of clients in the residential, retail, healthcare, education, and Federal/State government market sectors, among others.
In 2007, Webcor and Japanese construction giant Obayashi formed a limited partnership that has allowed the companies to share resources. The agreement greatly enhanced Webcor’s bonding capacity and financial stability and has allowed them to expand more quickly and take on larger projects.
“As our company enters its seventh year in partnership with Obayashi, it only makes sense for us to expand our footprint throughout the Pacific Rim,” added Zarubin. “It’s a bold step forward for us and one we hope will allow our operations to continue to expand, so we can continue to bring the Webcor name and reputation for quality to new places.”
